Ryann Sinclair of Mooresville, N.C. leads after the first round of stroke play qualifying at the 22nd North Carolina Junior Girls' Championship at Maple Chase Golf and Country Club in Winston-Salem, N.C. The rising senior shot a one-over-par 73 in the first qualifying round.

The stroke play qualifying rounds will determine the top-32 players that will advance to match play and also determine how players will be seeded during match play. The Round of 32 will begin after Wednesday's second round of stroke play qualifying.

Battling a steady light rain and wind throughout the day, Sinclair recorded four birdies, including a great up-and-down for birdie on her last hole of the day. She attributed her great opening round to her ability to consistently keep her ball out of the rough.

"I kept my drives basically on the fairway, so they were in good position for my approach shots onto the green," Sinclair said.

Sinclair finished two shots ahead of Charleigh Hodges of Mooresville, N.C., who finished at three-over par 75. Sinclair said her performance in the first qualifying round will help her prepare for her upcoming matches, even though the format will change after tomorrow morning's round.

"I think it is a confidence booster," Sinclair said. "Match play isn't about counting your strokes, but it's nice to know that I'm striking the ball well and scoring well, so hopefully that will translate over."

Alexis Sudjianto of Charlotte, N.C., Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C., Muskan Uppal of Cornelius, N.C. and Sasha Hayes of Winston-Salem, N.C. all finished at four-over par and are currently tied for third. Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Mallory Fobes of East Bend, N.C. are both members of Maple Chase Golf and Country Club, and are at six-over-par and seven-over par, respectively.

The championship format is 36 holes of stroke play qualifying followed by match play. Top 32 in stroke play qualifying advance to match play.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer ages 12 to 18 as of June 15, 2018, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club. Entries are subject to rejection at any time, including during the event, by the CGA or the host club.
