When the North Carolina Senior Women's Championship was held at Irving Park in 2012, Pat Brogden of Garner, N.C. edged Patty Moore of Charlotte, N.C. by one stroke. On Tuesday, Brogden's even-par 72 on the Donald Ross layout provided a three-stroke cushion over Lea Anne Brown of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. in the 19th Carolinas Senior Women's Amateur Championship.

The championship is conducted at 36 holes of stroke play (no cut). All players, regardless of Handicap Index, have the option to play in the Championship Division or the Carolinas Division, which plays a shorter course.

The top-ranked senior women's golfer in the Carolinas, Brogden mixed three birdies with three birdies in her opening round. "I hit the ball close all day and was just never in a good position to make a birdie putt," said Brogden, who won the North Carolina Senior Amateur in April. "If I had made some putts today, I could have gone pretty low." A five-time Carolinas Senior Women's champion, Brogden held a share of the 18-hole lead last year before finishing runner-up to Kim Briele of New Bern, N.C.

Playing on her 58th birthday, Brown recorded four bogeys and one birdie in search of her first Carolinas Senior Women's title. This year the fourth ranked senior women's golfer won the Women's South Carolina Golf Association's Senior Championship and qualified for match play in the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur.

In the Carolinas Division, Sook Hee Yang of Jamestown, N.C. notched four birdies en route to a one-under 71. Carole Jones of Hillsborough, N.C. and Diane Yelovich of Pinehurst, N.C. share the lead for the Low Super Senior award in the Carolinas Division at seven-over-par 79. The award is given to the lowest score in the Carolinas Division (shorter course) who is over the age of 65.

Greensboro Country Club member Candace Cummings of Greensboro, N.C. used a 5-wood to make her first career hole-in-on on the 145-yard 16th hole.

The final round will begin with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start. This year's champion will be awarded the newly minted Patty Moore trophy, honoring the seven-time event winner.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 50th birthday by the first day of the championship, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 40.4.
