A Look at the Field for the 8th NC Am Match Play
At just 19 years old, Eric Bae of Pinehurst has captured two CGA titles
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (July 31, 2017) -- The Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) will conduct the 8th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Treyburn Country Club in Durham, N.C. from Wednesday - Sunday, August 2-6 (7,049 yards, par 36-36--72).

The 8th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship will feature 113 players. The championship format is 36 holes of stroke play to determine 32 qualifiers for match play.
Sculpted into the scenic, rolling Carolina hills of northern Durham, the essence of Treyburn Country Club is its Tom Fazio designed championship golf course. Playing to a par 72, Treyburn was named "Best New Course" by Golf Digest in its inaugural year and has matured into one of the most consistently recognized courses in North Carolina.
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by the start of the championship, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 7.4.
Top Ranked Players:
Eric Bae, 19, of Pinehurst is ranked 6th in North Carolina. Earlier this month, Bae finished T8 at the Carolinas Amateur and qualified for the 2017 U.S. Amateur. A two-time CGA champion, Bae is a rising sophomore at Wake Forest University.
Nicholas Lyerly, 18, of Salisbury is the top ranked junior golfer in North Carolina. Last year, Lyerly became the youngest champion of the North Carolina Amateur. He will attend UNC-Greensboro in the fall.
Jackson Spires, 22, of Fayetteville is ranked 12th in N.C. Spires has top-10 finishes at the 2017 CPGA NC Open, 2016 Eastern Amateur, CCNC Amateur and Carolinas Young Amateur. Ranked 19th, Spires is a rising redshirt senior at East Carolina University.
Steven Brame, 34, of Henderson won the 2013 North Carolina Amateur. Currently ranked 16th in N.C., his closest bout for a second CGA title came at the 2016 North Carolina Mid-Amateur, where he finished runner-up. Brame has recorded top-15 finishes this year at the Azalea Invitational and the Carolinas Mid-Amateur.
Joseph Cansler, 22, of Clemmons is ranked 23rd in N.C. A rising senior at UNC-Greensboro, Cansler placed T17 at the Carolinian Amateur this spring and T2 at last year's Cardinal Amateur.
Eric Edwards, 21, of Salisbury is ranked 28th in N.C. A rising senior at George Mason, Edwards finished T13 at the Carolinas Amateur earlier this month and T22 at the North Carolina Amateur in June.
Nolan Mills, IV, 20, of Charlotte is ranked 31st in N.C. A rising senior at N.C. State, this summer Mills placed fifth at the Carolinas Amateur and T11 at the North Carolina Amateur. At last year's championship held at Mid Pines Inn & GC, Mills qualified as the 5th seed for match play before falling in 20 holes in the Round of 32.
The youngest player in the field, Grayson Wotnosky, 16, of Wake Forest, has three top-5 finishes this summer at Tarheel Youth Golf Association events. In 2014, Wotnosky was victorious at the North Carolina Boys' 13 & Under Championship. This spring, he and Akshay Bhatia advanced to match play at the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball.
The oldest player in the field, Preston Edmondson, 59, of Morrisville, is the 4th ranked senior golfer in North Carolina. Last year, Edmondson collected his first two CGA titles at the Carolinas Senior Amateur and North Carolina Senior Four-Ball championships.
