Concord native Stephen Carroll recorded seven birdies en route to an opening 66. Beginning on the back nine at Cabarrus, Carroll made his lone bogey of the day on the 13th hole to fall to one-over-par before sinking a 20-foot birdie putt on 15 and a 35-footer on 16. Following a birdie on the par-5 18th, Carroll was two-under. Carroll converted four birdies on his inward nine, including a 54-degree wedge from 106 yards to five-feet above the hole on the 403-yard par-4 4th.

Playing in his last junior tournament, the 18-year-old Carroll is excited about being atop the leaderboard at six-under-par. "It feels good," said Carroll, who will play at East Carolina University in the fall. "I don't think I've ever led after the first day of a CGA tournament."

The Carolinas Junior Boys' championship format is 54-holes of stroke play. The field will be reduced to the low 70 and ties after 36 holes.

Posting a bogey-free 67, Attie Giles of Pinehurst, N.C. is one-stroke back of Carroll. Missing just four greens Tuesday, Giles had a stress-free round while carding his all-time competitive low score. Playing his first nine holes in two-under, the 17-year-old stuck a flip 9-iron from 133 yards to three feet for birdie on the par-4 4th, his twelfth hole.

Giles closed his round with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 8th then sank a left-to-right breaking birdie putt on 9. "My swing was good. I hurt my back last week and yesterday was the first day I had played since."

13-year-old Abhay Gupta of Concord, N.C. carded four-under 68, his lowest score at Cabarrus Country Club, a course he plays regularly. Gupta is tied for third with College of Charleston commit Brady Hinkle, 17, of Lancaster, S.C.

Eight players are tied for fifth place at three-under. In the group that posted 69 Tuesday are defending champion Jacob Bridgeman, 17, of Inman, S.C. and 2015 North Carolina Junior Boys' champion Jack Massei, 18, of Cary, N.C. Thirty-three players played better than par-72 on the George Cobb layout.

Scoring will be provided by the CGA throughout the championship, offering 9 and 18-hole updates. Live updates will also be available on the CGA’s official Twitter, @CarolinasJunior. Continue to visit the CGA website throughout this championship and all year long for complete championship coverage including scores, interviews, photos, and recaps.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has not reached his 19th birthday by July 27, 2017, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA handicap index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.4.
