Match Play Bracket Set at the 50th NC Junior Boys'
Spencer Oxendine of Fayetteville earned medalist honors with a three-under 68
THOMASVILLE, N.C. (June 27, 2017) -- Stroke play qualifying results from the 50th N.C. Junior Boys’ Championship at Colonial Country Club in Thomasville, N.C. on Tuesday, June 27th (6,809 yards, par 36-35--71, Course Rating 72.3/123).

In a marathon day that that took over 12 hours to complete - including a 19-for-9 playoff - 149 of the best junior golfers in North Carolina competed Tuesday at Colonial Country Club to finish in the top 64 and advance into the match play portion of the 50th N.C. Junior Boys’ Championship.
16-year-old Spencer Oxendine of Fayetteville took home medalist honors. Oxendine got off to a hot start, making birdies on his first two holes. Struggling a bit in the middle of his round, a bogey on the 11th dropped him back to even-par. At that point Oxendine was worried about making the cut to match play. "One shot at a time, that's how I took it," he recalled after the round.
Oxendine would respond by drilling a 50-degree wedge from 140 yards for a kick-in birdie on the par-4 14th. He followed that with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 16 & 17 to card two-under 33 on the back nine. His three-under 68 on the par-71 layout earns the No. 1 seed for match play, which begins Wednesday morning at Colonial Country Club.
Last year Oxendine lost in the first round of match play. He is excited to see how far he can advance in the bracket. "I love match play so much," said the rising high school junior. "I feel like I can use my length off the tee to my advantage. If I can get the putter rolling, I can win a lot of matches this week."
Grant Smith of Charlotte and Matias La Grutta of Cary finished one-stroke back of Oxendine at two-under 69. Smith's round was bolstered by a 186-yard 5-iron to 12-feet for an eagle on his closing hole, the 501-yard par-5 9th.
The cut line fell at five-over-par 76. There was a 19-for-9 playoff to determine the final match play spots. 13-year-old Jackson Van Paris of Pinehurst and 14-year-old Ike Joy of Denver were among those to qualify for match play through the playoff. The Round of 64 will begin Wednesday morning at 8:00 a.m. from the first and tenth tees.
The championship format is match play with an 18 hole of stroke play qualifier to determine the seeding for match play. The top 64 boys from the stroke play qualifier advance to match play. The 50th North Carolina Junior Boys' champion will be invited to represent the CGA in the Virginias-Carolinas Junior Team Matches at Boonesboro Country Club in Lynchburg, VA on August 12-13, 2017.
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer ages 12-18 as of June 30, 2017, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.3. There are no age divisions. Boys will compete in one division.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)
The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
