Quarterfinals Set at Carolinas Four-Ball Championship

CAMDEN, S.C. – Rounds of 32 and 16 match play results of the 66th Carolinas Four-Ball Championship hosted by Camden Country Club in Camden, S.C. on Friday, May 5, 2017 (6455 yards, par 35-35—70, 71.6/128).

“This course is difficult enough without the wind”, a sentiment echoed throughout the day as the Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches came to a close. Camden Country Club’s small greens became even harder to hold with a club-and-a-half of wind most of the day.

Stroke play qualifying medalists and 2013 Carolinas Four-Ball Champions Paul Tucker of Waxhaw, N.C. & Brent Roof of Columbia, S.C. won both of their matches and advanced to the quarterfinals to be played on Saturday.  In the round of 16, Tucker and Roof won “a dogfight” against Mark Hodges of Belmont, N.C. and Andrew Smith of Charlotte, N.C.  After Hodges/Smith squared the match on No. 14, Roof drained a 40-foot birdie putt on No. 15.  Tucker then got in on the action making a 25-footer on No. 16 that helped propel them to a 2&1 victory. 

Higher seeds dominated the Round of 32 matches, but in the Round of 16, two upsets knocked out the five and six seeds.  21-seed Matt Carter/Weston Bell defeated 5-seed James Lightsey/Thomas Rea, 4&2.  22-seed Matthew Laydon/Chris Mitchell defeated 6-seed Ryan Reynolds/Parker Dudley, 5&4.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals are juniors Michael Childress/Landsdon Robbins and Ryan Marter/Jack Parrott.  Marter/Parrott will face father-son duo Neil Harrell/Logan Harrell who advanced to the quarterfinals after winning their match in 20 holes.

Rounding out the quarterfinal contenders are NC State teammates Justin Hood/Jake McBride and the mid-amateur team of Daniel Neveu/Sherrill Britt.

The quarterfinal matches are set to begin at 8:00am at Camden Country Club on Saturday morning.

The Carolinas Four-Ball Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by the first day of the championship, is a resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club.
