GREENSBORO, NC (September 23, 2016) – First round results of the 23rd North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship at Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro, NC on Friday, September 23, 2016.

Pacing the field after round one at the North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship are Sherrill Britt of West End, NC and Noi Chay from Apex, NC. “Well I didn’t lose a golf ball”, Britt joked after a steady round featuring four birdies and no bogeys. Mid-Amateur championships are often referred to as ‘working-man championships’, and Choy proved that, having to change clothes and head straight to work after his round of 67.
Defending champion, Greg Earnhardt of Greensboro, NC, started his quest for a repeat with a three-under par 68. Earnhardt used five birdies on the day to propel him into a tie for the third place with fellow Greensboro native and partner in next week’s North Carolina Four-Ball Championship Dustin Moore.
Players were greeted with fast greens and a perfect golf course at Starmount Forest and scores showed; as 16 players broke par in round one. 24 golfers are within four shots of the lead after round one.
After the second round, the field will be cut to the low 60 scores and ties for Sunday’s final round at Starmount Forest Country Club. The North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship is open to any male golfer in North Carolina with a Handicap Index of 7.4 or less.
