Walker Cup Team Members Highlight Rosters

 

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (August 23, 2016) -- The United States Golf Association (USGA) will conduct the 12th USGA Men's State Team Championship at the Country Club of Birmingham (West Course) in Birmingham, Alabama on September 28-30.

This biannual national championship began in 1995 as part of the USGA's Centennial celebration and is contested on the even years for men and odd years for women. The championships are open to players from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Amateur golfers must reside in the state or territory and cannot be an active college player. Texas has won a record four times and Minnesota has prevailed twice.

State associations may use any criteria of their choosing in selecting their three-person team. The North Carolina lineup is selected by the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) while the South Carolina team is determined by the South Carolina Golf Association (SCGA). In 2014, North Carolina finished in a tie for 12th and South Carolina tied for 17th.

This year both teams return just one player from their 2014 squad. Walker Cup team members Scott Harvey of Greensboro, N.C., (2015) and Todd White of Spartanburg, S.C., (2013) headline their respective teams.

The event will be a 54-hole stroke play championship, with two of the lowest three individual scores counting for each round. Designed by Donald Ross in 1926, the West Course at the Country Club of Birmingham hosted the 2013 U.S. Mid-Amateur.

Representatives from the Carolinas:

NORTH CAROLINA  

Scott Harvey , 38, of Greensboro. Making his fifth USGA State Team appearance, Harvey is the No. 1 ranked amateur in the Carolinas, 2014 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, three-time U.S. Mid-Amateur co-medalist, 2015 U.S. Walker Cup team member, won the 2015 South American Amateur, seven -time CGA champion, and five-time reigning Carolinas Men’s Player of the Year.

 

 

 

Justin Tereshko , 26, of Jamestown is r anked 5th in the Carolinas, earning his first USGA State Team selection. In 2015 Tereshko captured the North Carolina Open. In the last two years he has back-to-back runner-up finishes in the North Carolina Amateur. He is the head golf coach at Guilford College. 

 

 

 

 

David Gies, II , 27, of Charlotte will be appearing in his first USGA State Team. Gies made the quarterfinals at the 2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur and played in the 2012 and 2014 U.S. Amateurs. A graduate of the University of North Alabama, he is the 15th ranked men's amateur golfer in the Carolinas.

 

 

 

 

SOUTH CAROLINA 

Robert Dargan of Columbia turns 47 on Sunday. He is a two-time SCGA Mid-Amateur champion (2001 & 2014). The lefty has also won 10 SCGA Lefthander and 11 Lefty-Righty titles. After teaming with his brother David to win the Lefty-Righty championship earlier this year, last weekend the duo won their first SCGA Mid-Amateur Four-Ball. Robert coaches the A.C. Flora High boys' golf program.

 

 

Todd Hendley of Greer celebrates his 58th birthday Tuesday. This year Hendley captured his second consecutive SCGA Senior Championship. Like Dargan, he has also won two SCGA Mid-Amateurs (2012 & 2015).

 

 

 

Todd White , 48, of Spartanburg is making his fifth USGA State Team appearance. Among his golf accomplishments, White was a member of the 2013 U.S. Walker Cup team, 2014 U.S. Mid-Amateur quarterfinalist, three-time South Carolina Amateur Match Play champion, and three-time SCGA Player of the Year.
