Carolinas Team Brings Home Seventh-Straight Victory

A recap from the Carolinas-Virginias Women's Team Matches

WALLACE, N.C. (July 13, 2016) -- The 60th Carolinas-Virginias Team Matches were held on the River Course at River Landing Golf Club in Wallace, N.C. on July 11-13, 2016. The annual team match is conducted by the Carolinas, Virginia and West Virginia Golf Associations.

The race to claim the Carolinas-Virginias Women’s Team Matches champions began on Monday, July 11 at River Landing in Wallace, N.C. First round play of the 60^th Carolinas-Virginias Women’s Team Matches consisted of 12 four-ball matches between the two teams. In the format, three points are available per match; a point is scored for winning the outward half, the inward nine and the overall match. The Carolinas team, which consisted of 24 players, got out to an early lead during the four-ball match play competition and ended the day with 20.5 points. The Virginias team was close behind and at the conclusion of day one, they earned 15.5 points and only trailed the Carolinas by 5 points.

The Carolinas was captained by Angela Stewart, who alongside teammate Pat Brogden, swept their opponents and earned a full 3 points. Importantly for the Carolinas, the team scored at least one-half point in 11 of the 12 matches. Virginias posted five wins on the first day but were also shutout in three encounters.

Following close behind Brogden and Stewart was Kim Briele and Lea Anne Brown, who swept Virginias Captain Mimi Hoffman and her partner, Cyndi Carlson. Lea Venable and Juliana Sebastian of the Carolinas team also swept an incredibly tough pairing of Virginias teammates, Lyndsey Hunnell and Lauryn Davidson. However, as the scoreboard shows, day one was not dominated by the Carolinas. The contingent of Boodie McGurn and Lindsay Wortham proved to be too much for Carolinas teammates Leigh Coulter and Susan Beaupied, as the tandem lost all 3 points to the Virginias. The Virginias team also collected key points from Alexandra Austin and Marin Warring, who won 2.5 points in their match over veteran Cecilia Fournil and Savannah Hallman. Carol Robertson and Amanda Hollandsworth tacked on another 2.5 points, defeating the Carolinas duo of Mary-Katelyn Holanek and partner Mary-Kathryn Donovan.

Carolinas won five of twelve opening day encounters and halved one other.

Day Two

Entering day two of the Team Matches, the Carolinas owned a ten-point advantage.  Carolinas won the second day in the Pinehurst modified foursome match format by six points (21-15) and at the conclusion of play on day two, Carolinas held an 11 point lead over their Virginias counterparts with a total score of Carolinas: 41.5, Virginias: 30.5.

In the foursome matches, Carolinas notched six wins and halved one other match; the team scored at least one-half point in 10 of the 12 matches. Cecilia Fournil and Savannah Hallman lead the way, posting the first shutout of the day over Kayleigh Reed and Andrea Miller. Duos Savanna Wood-Abbey Hartsell and Karen Ferree-Susan Beaupied also registered shutouts and an accompanying three points in their encounters. Virginias, meanwhile, received a 3-0 blanking from the team of Christina Herbert-Adeena Shears and Karen Kinnett-Sherry Bowman.

Carolinas also received wins and two and a half points from Hannah Craver and Juliana Sebastian, as well as two points from Carley Cox-Emily Stinson, and Lea Venable-Katie Kirk. On the Virginias side, Lyndsey Hunnell combined with Amanda Hollandsworth and Cyndi Carlson teamed up with Joanne Kitusky to record two and a half points.

Carolinas won seven of twelve day two encounters and halved one other.

Day Three

The Carolinas team posted a wire-to-wire 25-point victory (84-60) over their Virginias counterparts to win the 60th Virginias-Carolinas Women’s Team Matches. This victory by the Carolinas team marks their seventh consecutive Carolinas-Virginias Women’s Team Matches win.

The Carolinas, owners of an 11-point lead entering the final day of the event, won closing day singles matches by 13 points. Carolinas notched 15 wins in 24 encounters on day three. Carolinas received 7 shutouts and the accompanying three points from the following payers: Susan Beaupied, Emily Stinson, Angela Stewart, Pat Brogden, Leigh Coulter, Savanna Wood, and Lea Venable.

Carolinas team captain Angela Stewart was undefeated this week, earning her team nine points throughout the three days. Alongside the undefeated captain, Pat Brogden also recorded nine points for the Carolinas with her perfect match-play record this week.

On day three, Virginias posted a trio of 3-0 blankings from Elizabeth Bose, Sydney Snodgrass, and Alexandra Austin. Also recording points and winning their matches for the Virginias were: Cyndi Carlson, Amanda Hollandsworth, Boodie McGurn, Natalie Easterly, Andrea Miller, and Carol Robertson.

As the matches concluded, Captain Angela Steward and co-captain Terrie Allemang hoisted the trophy high above their heads, as their team celebrated on the 18^th green. Undefeated for the week, Captain Stewart could not have asked for a better first captaincy. “It means a lot to me because this is my first time being captain and I’m on home turf. It’s also a lot of pressure because we were going for our seventh consecutive win.” When asked about her team’s performance this week Stewart said, “I’m just really proud of my team and how they hung in there and fought out their points. Everyone showed true heart and grit.” Stewart, who has played in numerous Carolinas-Virginias team matches, says that, “Playing against the Virginias team is hard because most of them you have known for a long time and they are your friends. Everyone wants to win but everyone can’t win. The Virginias team was very gracious in defeat, but we look forward to more great competitions.”
