Windermere Club to host 50th Twin States Girls'

The Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) has announced that the 50th Twin States Girls’ Championship will be conducted at The Windermere Club in Blythewood, S.C. on June 28-29, 2016.  The event will be a 36-hole stroke play tournament for junior girls from North Carolina and South Carolina 18 years of age and younger who have not started college.  An anticipated field of 72 golfers will compete on the Pete and P.B. Dye designed golf course that has hosted six CGA championships along with many other prestigious amateur and professional events.

The Twin States Girls’ Championship was started in 1967 by the Women’s Carolinas Golf Association as a stroke play championship for junior girls from North and South Carolina.  The first tournament was conducted at Pinehurst CC in Pinehurst, N.C. on the No. 1 course and was won by Debra Rhodes of North Wilkesboro, N.C.  Rhodes proceeded to win the next two Twins States Championships on Pinehurst CC No. 2 in Pinehurst, N.C. and at Green Valley CC in Greenville, S.C.  Rhodes is one of four who have won three Twin States titles.  The others are Donna Horton (1970, 1971 and 1972) of Kinston, N.C., World Golf Hall of Fame member and LPGA tour member Beth Daniel (1973, 1974 and 1975) of Charleston, S.C. and Page Marsh (1979, 1981 and 1982) of Jamestown, N.C.  Other notable champions are Stephanie Korengay of Mt.Olive, N.C., Stephanie Neill of Charlotte, N.C., March Newton of High Point, N.C., Brandi Jackson of Belton, S.C., Anne Marie Covar of Edgefield, S.C., Gina Kim of Chapel Hill, N.C. and defending champion Kathleen Sumner of Charleston, S.C.  The Carolinas Golf Association assumed the running of the championship in 2007.

The Windermere Club features a gorgeous Pete and P.B. Dye design golf course with gently rolling fairways leading to lightning fast bent grass greens, a superb test for the better golfer, yet forgiving enough for the higher handicapper. The Windermere Club is a taste of true southern hospitality, where everyone who walks through the door is treated as a member.

The most unique aspect of this course (and most others designed by Pete Dye) is Pete's design philosophy. His philosophy dictates designing as many unique or "memorable" holes as possible on every course. The Windermere Club has 13 truly "memorable" holes  (most good golf courses have 2-5 such holes) and no two holes of The Windermere Club are remotely alike. This creates 18 totally different golfing experiences in one round.
