Kirk Remains Steady at Car Women’s Am

Defending champion Katie Kirk, 22, of Davidson, N.C. put together consecutive under par rounds on her path toward back-to-back Carolinas Women's Amateur titles. Despite not hitting the ball as well today, she followed up her opening 71 with a two-under par 70 to claim the two-day medalist award.

"When I had the chance, I capitalized with birdie," Kirk reflected on her four birdie, two bogey day. "But I did a pretty good job of damage control, too. I was able to scramble for some really good pars."

Last year's win culminated with a birdie on the 54^th hole. This year she will begin the final round with a two-shot advantage at three-under par 141.

"I'm going to stick to my game plan for what I hit off the tees," Kirk commented about playing with the lead. "I'm just going to try to do the same thing I've done the past two days: hit it close, make some birdie putts, and hopefully another good round will seal the deal."

Kirk's playing companions did not control damage as well. After sinking seven birdies yesterday, first round leader Sarah Bae of Pinehurst, N.C. added four more. Unfortunately, her round also included six bogeys and a double-bogey. The four-over par 76 result puts the 20-year-old alone in third place with a two-day total of 145.

Despite her second round 77, last year's runner-up, Bailey Cocca of Myrtle Beach, S.C., made tomorrow's final pairing. Her round, which included two double-bogeys, was seven strokes higher than yesterday. A two-day total of three-over par 147 drops the 21-year-old from second to a tie for fourth.

Ashley Sloup, 19, of Southport, N.C. started her second round with consecutive birdies on holes 10 and 11. On her final hole, the 488 yard par-5 9th, Sloup almost made eagle from the fairway. "I almost holed-out from 52 yards," said Sloup, who just finished her freshman year on the Winthrop University golf team. "I had a tap-in birdie. It was a good way to end the round."

Sloup will start the final round two strokes back of Kirk. "I'm just going to play confident and go after it," Sloup said about chasing her first CGA victory. "It would be the best win of my career." After even par in the first round, her one-under second round performance has her at one-under par 143 for the championship.

Lori Beth Adams, of Burlington, N.C. was one of the few, like Kirk and Sloup, to better their score in the second round. On a day where scores averaged one stroke higher than yesterday, Adams made five birdies to post one-under par 71; a six stroke improvement. On Monday, Adams was medalist at a 36 hole qualifier in Pennsylvania for the 2015 U.S. Women's Open. A double-bogey on the par-5 11th today prevented her from climbing even higher on the leaderboard. The 23-year-old currently sits tied for sixth at four-over par 148.

The Overall Champion and the Senior Champion (age 50+) will be determined from the contestants playing in the Championship Division. Susan Beaupied, 56, of Pittsboro, N.C. leads the Senior division by two strokes over Brenda Corrie Kuehn, 50, of Asheville, N.C.

The Super Senior Champion (age 65+) will be determined from contestants playing in the Carolinas Division. Carole Jones, 70, of Hillsborough, N.C. and Clate Aydlett, 73, of Elizabeth City, N.C. are tied at 19-over par 163. Back-to-back rounds of five-over par 77 awarded Melissa Sage, 62, of Charlotte, N.C. medalist honors in the Carolinas division. This division plays a shorter set of tees than the Championship.

Following today's round, players are placed into flights within their division. The final round will begin with a 9:00am shot-gun.

This championship is the premier stroke play event for women from around the Carolinas (North and South Carolina) and is open to all CGA women members from all ages and abilities. This is the most historic women’s amateur championship in the Carolinas which was first conducted by the Women’s Carolinas Golf Association in 1922. The Women’s Carolinas Golf Association turned over the responsibilities of their association and this championship over to the Carolinas Golf Association back in 2012.

The championship is conducted at 54 holes of stroke play (no cut). All players, regardless of Handicap Index, have the option to play in the "Championship Division" or the "Carolinas Division".  A tie for Overall Champion, Senior Champion and Super Senior Champion is determined by an on-course playoff. Prizes and merchandise are awarded to the Overall Champion, Senior Champion and Super Senior Champion. Merchandise is awarded to winners in each flight. A medalist award is given to the low scorer in each division after 36 holes of play.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 13th birthday by May 19, 2015, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 40.4.
