Four birdies and an eagle contributed to a three-under-par 68 for Pat Thompson, 56, of nearby Asheville. Starting on the back nine of the par-71 layout, Thompson made two bogeys in his first five holes before eagling the par-5 16th. "That kind of turned around my whole round," said Thompson. "I went from two-over and feeling that I was playing well but not getting anything out of it, to you know, game on." With that momentum shift, he started his inward nine holes by converting three birdies in a row.

Alone in second place at two-under-par, one shot back of Thompson, is 66-year-old Alan Dirk of Sanford. Four players are tied for third at one-under-par 70 including 28-time CGA champion Paul Simson of Raleigh and 5-time CGA champion Jim Grainger, 58, of Charlotte. Simson, who turned 64 on Sunday, is chasing his record-setting 7th victory in this championship. Tied with Simson and Grainger are Champion Hills Club member Richard Hackel, 58, of Hendersonville and Robby Kirby, 55, of Charlotte.

Defending champion Jim Pearson of Charlotte is recovering from surgery.

The North Carolina Amateur Championship is 54 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 60 scores and ties. Entry is open to any male golfer who has reached his 55th birthday by May 12, 2015, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a member club that does not exceed 10.4.
