AIKEN, SC-- 22 year-old Jason Gabriel of Aiken defeated Rob Simmons of Walterboro, 1 up in the 36-hole final match of the South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Palmetto Golf Club.<

 

Gabriel, a part-time construction worker held on to a slim lead throughout the day before tying Simmons on the final hole to capture the win.<

 

In the morning round, Gabriel lost the lead after the 12th hole but quickly squared back with Simmons on 14. Gabriel won the 18th hole in the morning round and maintained the lead for the rest of the day.<

 

"I am going to school right now to get my associates degree," said the 22 year old Gabriel. "Hopefully some college coaches will take note and know that I am available to play college golf."

 

Simmons, in pursuit of his third CGA title, struggled with putting problems throughout the day.<

 

The event is conducted by the Carolinas Association.<
