Terry Ezell, Rock Hill, SC def. Steve Wright, Laurinburg, NC 1 up

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- Terry Ezell of Rock Hill, SC won the final two holes for a one-up margin of victory over Steve Wright of Laurinburg, NC in the final of the 84th Carolinas Amateur golf championship at Charlotte Country Club.

Ezell, 38, the 1989 champion and 1996 Carolinas Mid-Amateur winner parred the 35th hole of the match and birdied the 36th hole to sweep the title from Wright, 48, who had just taken his first lead of the match on the 34th hole.

Ezell's victory marked the fourth year in a row an amateur from South Carolina has taken the Carolinas Amateur.

Ezell, a urologist, felt the match was not well played but interesting for the crowd of approximately fifty spectators who watched, "We both looked ragged, but I think we at least made it exiting."

The exitement came to a fever pitch on the final hole as Wright barley missed birdie from 25 feet and then watched Ezell study his ten-foot birdie putt. "I thought I'd made my putt, but I knew he'd make his putt."

Ezell's victory automatically qualifies him for the Carolinas team which will take on a team from the Virginias in October at Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg, Virginia.

This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
