CHAPEL HILL, NC – Final round results of the 44th Senior Four-Ball Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by the Governors Club (Lakes-Foothills) in Chapel Hill, NC on Thursday, April 19, 2012 (6503 yards, par 36-36—72, 72.1/134).
Paul Simson & Don Detweiler of Raleigh, NC carded 13 birdies en route to a 13-under par 59 to win the Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship by seven strokes over Jim Grainger of Charlotte, NC & James Pearson of Charlotte, NC. Simson shot a 10-under par 62 on his own ball.
Simson & Detweiler finished the championship at 26-under par 190 total to set a new championship record score. Previous record was 193 by Frank Ford III & Bill Smunk at the 2011 championship.
“Just an amazing day,” Simson stated with a big smile. “We made every birdie that was reasonable.” Detweiler summarized the round as “spectacular”.
The title is Simson & Detweiler’s third Carolinas Senior Four-Ball crown (2008, 2010) and is Simson’s 24th CGA championship. Simson is now tied with Dale Morey for the most all-time CGA titles.
“Shooting 59 and winning my 24th CGA title, we had all the numbers working today,” Simson noted. “We played so well today and to win it again with such a good friend (Detweiler) makes it really special.”
Jim Grainger was paired with Simson & Detweiler and all he could say was “Wow.”
Defending champions, Frank Ford III of Charleston, SC & Bill Smunk of Kingstree, SC posted a five-under par 67 and finished in 10th place.
