Webber of Moore, SC captured the SC Junior Girls’ Match Play Championship
title defeating Hailey Cleary of Lexington, SC 2-up in the championship
match. Webber, who will be a freshman
this fall at College
of Charleston, survived a
spirited challenge in the finals
from Cleary, a rising high school freshman.
Webber took a two-up lead after four holes and each player traded wins
until the seventeenth hole where Webber three-putted and took a narrow one up
lead into the eighteenth hole. Webber then secured the
victory winning the final hole and
her first Carolinas Golf Association major title.
In the boys’ championship, defending champion Carson Young
of Pendleton, SC defeated Bryce Howell of Blythewood, SC 4&3 to reach the
championship match. Young faced off
against his high school teammate Austin Langdale of Townville, SC
in the championship match. Langdale reached the
finals by defeating Trey Taylor of Gaffney, SC in their
semi-finals match, 2&1. Langdale got off to a good start taking a two-up lead
through five, but Young battled back winning eight with an eagle of the
drivable eighth hole and made the turn with a one-up lead. A Landale bogey on
the tenth hole gave Young a two-up lead after ten and Young birdied fourteen
and fifteen to close out the match and successfully defend his title with a
4&3 victory. This was Young’s third
tournament victory in the past two weeks.
Young won the SCJGA The Blade Junior and the
Carolinas Amateur Championship over the past two weeks.
This
annual junior championship is conducted by the
Carolinas Golf Association.
