CAROLINAS TEAM WINS THE 11th MID-ATLANTIC GIRLS’ CHALLENGE
MIDLOTHIAN –– The eight-player Carolinas team posted a five-point victory, 8½-3½, over their Virginia-Maryland counterparts as the 11th Mid-Atlantic Girls’ Challenge concluded on Sunday at Independence Golf Club.
A team of juniors mixing Virginia and Maryland players against their North and South Carolina counterparts competed in the event.
Owners of a two-point lead (3-1) after Saturday's opening day four-ball encounters, Carolinas outscored Virginia-Maryland by three points (5½-2½) in concluding singles’ play.
Carolinas, which avenged last year’s loss in the matches, now leads the all-time series, 8-2-1, and owns a perfect 6-0-0 record on Virginia soil.
The two teams each tallied a point and a half through the first three encounters. Emily Brooks (Chapel Hill, N.C.) recorded an opening 6-and-5 win in singles’ for Carolinas. Meanwhile, in match two, 16-year-old Bryana Nguyen (Columbia, Md.) won three of the final four holes to defeat Lucia Polo (Greensboro, N.C.), 3 and 1. Nguyen concluded the match by draining a 10-foot birdie putt at the par-5 17th hole. In the third match of the day, Karishma Thiagaraj (Haymarket, Va.) halved Evie Dole (Raleigh, N.C.). Thiagaraj held as much as a three holes up advantage in the match, but Dole charged back and shot three under par on the second nine to earn one-half point.
The 18-year-old Thiagaraj, making her last appearance in the matches before passing the age eligibility limit, contributed a point and a half for Virginia-Maryland over the weekend.
Carolinas claimed four of the final five matches to secure victory. For Carolinas, Sarah Bae (Cary, N.C.) notched a 3-and-2 win in the fourth encounter, while Kelsey Badmaev (Blythewood, S.C.) followed it up with a 4-and-2 triumph. Bae defeated Elizabeth Bose (Norfolk, Va.), while Badmaev ousted Lauren Eklund (Charlottesville, Va.).
In that stretch, 15-year-old Jordan McKelvin of Westminster, Md., accounted for Virginia-Maryland’s only point, registering a par-win at No. 17 to ultimately outlast Isabella Rusher (Salisbury, N.C.), 1 up. McKelvin paced Virginia-Maryland by scoring two points.
Carolinas finished off the matches as Victoria Allred (Pfafftown, N.C.) defeated Delaney Shah (North Potomac, Md.), 4 and 3, while Kelli Murphy (Elgin, S.C.) got past Lyndsey Hunnell (Troutville, Va.), 2 and 1.
For Carolinas, Bae, Murphy and Badmaev went undefeated, securing a team-leading two points in the matches.
