CHARLOTTE, NC - Final round results of the 98th Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, NC on Sunday, July 15, 2012 (7137 yards, par 36-35—71, 74.9/144).
17-year old Carson Young, Pendleton, SC, shot a final round 7-under 64 to win the 98th Carolinas Amateur Championship. Young started the day teeing off in the third to last group and birdied his first three holes to begin his remarkable round.
“I knew I had a chance to finish top three once I got those first three birdies,” Carson explained. He went on to make two more birdies against no bogies for a front nine total of 31 (5-under par). “Once I made birdie on number 8, it was the first time I thought maybe I had a chance to win. Eight had played tough for me all week and with that birdie it gave me some momentum,” said Carson. When asked if he knew Harvey was struggling a bit, Carson explained, “I didn’t know how I stood until I saw a leader board at the 11th tee and I thought I just needed to keep hitting greens and making putts.”
Defending champion Scott Harvey was the leader going into the final round of play. He stood at minus 7 and had a three shot lead on the field. Scott bogied hole number 1 missing a four foot par putt but got it right back with an excellent approach shot on number two to within 2 feet. When asked how he played, Harvey commented he was driving the ball in the middle of the fairway for the first three days but during this last round he was finding the rough more often. He also struggled with his putter throughout the round.
Carson Young is currently the South Carolina Junior Boys Match Play Champion and will defend his title next week at Lake Marion Golf Club in Santee, SC. As he accepted his trophy, he thanked his Mom for her support and declared the Carolinas Amateur Championship as one his new favorite tournaments. This was Young’s first time competing in the Carolinas Amateur Championship and he is one of the youngest champions to win the Richard S. Tufts Trophy. Carson was named the CGA Junior Boys Player of the Year for 2011 for his stellar play throughout 2011. He was also a member of the winning Carolinas Junior Team in the annual Carolinas-Virginias Junior Boys Team matches. Young has committed to play collegiate golf at Clemson University upon completing his last year of high school. The 64 was a career best round for Young.
The top 30 players earned an exemption into the 99th Carolinas Amateur Championship that will be played July 11-14, 2013 at The Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, SC.
