CAROLINAS TEAM WINS THE 29th VIRGINIAS-CAROLINAS
JUNIOR MATCHES

LYNCHBURG, Va. –– The eight-golfer Carolinas team won four of the final five closing day singles matches to post a three-point victory (9½-6½) against their Virginias counterparts to claim the 29th Virginias-Carolinas Junior Matches, which concluded today at Boonsboro Country Club. One point was available per each match.

Carolinas led by a single point following opening day foursome and four-ball encounters and outscored their opponents 5-3 in Sunday’s concluding singles’ matches to triumph.

Carolinas claimed the Vinny Giles Trophy, notched its first win in the series since 2006 and ended a three-match drought on Virginia soil. Carolinas last win at Boonsboro came in 2003 in the event, which alternates between the Lynchburg-based VSGA member club and sites in the Carolinas.

Virginias got off to a strong start by winning two of the first three encounters to tie things up at five and a half points apiece as Ryan Mondy (Blacksburg, Va.) and Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) each posted wins. Mondy defeated Will Thomas (Cary N.C.), 3 and 1, while Smith ousted Austin Langdale (Townville, S.C.), 5 and 4. For Carolinas, Stanhope Johnson Jr. (Greensboro, N.C.), this summer’s North Carolina Junior Boys’ champion, posted the team’s only victory in the first three encounters, besting central Virginian Christopher Kapsak (Richmond), 2 up.

Thereafter, Carolinas recorded event-deciding victories, scoring three straight wins in matches 4-6. For Carolinas in that stretch, reigning South Carolina Junior Match Play champion Carson Young (Pendleton, S.C.) defeated Alex Lloyd (Virginia Beach, Va.) 4 and 3. Thereafter, Will Long (Gastonia, N.C.), the 2011 Carolinas Junior winner, notched a 3 and 2 victory over John David Sanderson (Suffolk, Va.) in the ensuing match. Then, in a matchup of U.S. Junior participants from this summer, national championship quarterfinalist Will Starke (Chapin, S.C.) got past event semifinalist Adam Ball (Richmond, Va.), 2 and 1 to complete the surge of victories for Carolinas.

Blacksburg’s Jake Mondy, the two-time reigning Virginia State Golf Association Junior Stroke Play victor, ended the winless span for Virginias, registering a 3 and 2 victory over Andrew Decker (Greenville, N.C.) in match seven. Mondy, who is headed to Auburn University on a golf scholarship later this month, was participating in the event for the final time before passing the age eligibility limit.

Last week’s Junior PGA champion, Cody Proveaux (Leesville, S.C.), bound for Clemson University to start his college career in a few weeks, closed things out in his final start in the matches, posting a 3 and 2 victory over Woody Woodward (Bridgeport, W.Va.).

Starke, South Carolina’s Class 3A Most Valuable Player, and Johnson both went undefeated over the weekend’s play, supplying a team-leading three points. Starke has already committed to play at the University of South Carolina in the fall of 2012.

For Virginias, Mondy, Smith and Woodward, the reigning West Virginia Golf Association Junior Match Play champion, paced the squad with two points in this year’s matches.

Carolinas leads the all-time series 15-13-1, but Virginias holds a 5-2-1 advantage in the annual renewal of the matches dating back to 2004.
