Final Results

Rock Hill, SC—Parker Allen of Blythewood, SC likes playing golf so much it took him 22 holes to capture the 32nd SC Junior Boys’ Match Play Championship being hosted by Rock Hill CC in Rock Hill, SC.  Parker, a seventeen-year-old rising high school senior, played three matches that went extra holes.  In the morning’s semifinals match, Allen defeated his high school teammate and neighbor Damon Postal, also of Blythewood, SC in 19 holes, winning with a birdie three on the first extra hole.  Also advancing to the championship match was Cody Proveaux of Leesville, SC defeating qualifying medalist and home town favorite Miles Curley of Rock Hill, SC by a score of 4&3.

     In the championship match, both young men traded birdies on the par four fourth hole.  Proveaux then took a one up lead on the fifth hole with a birdie.  Allen fought back to even the match after the first nine holes.  On the back side both players traded birdies again on the par five thirteenth hole.  Allen then took a one up lead by holing a 50 yard pitch for eagle on the par five fifteenth hole.  Proveaux squared the match on the seventh hole with a par.  On the eighteenth hole, Allen just missed a five footer that would have won the match.  On the first extra hole, Proveaux had a chance for the win, but mis-read a four footer that broke out of the hole at the last minute.  On the 22nd hole, Allen made a 15 footer for birdie and Proveaux missed a 10 footer to give the championship to Allen.

     This is Allen’s first Carolinas Golf Association title and he secured his place on the Carolinas team in the Carolinas-Virginias Junior team matches at Boonesboro CC in Lynchburg, VA on August 15 & 16, 2009.

 

In the girls’ championship, it did not take long for Elizabeth Thompson of Charleston, SC to win her semifinal and championship matches and claim the 10th SC Junior Girls’ Match Play Championship hosted by Rock Hill CC in Rock Hill, SC.  Thompson, a sixteen year old rising high school junior, defeated Anne Marie Covar of Edgefield, SC in the morning 4 and 2.  Thompson then faced off against Louise Oxner of Greenville, SC in the championship match.  Oxner, a fourteen year old rising high school freshman, advanced to the championship match defeating Katelyn Bensch of Greenville 3 and 2.

     In the championship match, Thompson got off to a 2 up start after two holes and continued to build on her lead.  On the par 3 sixth, her tee shot hit the pin and the ball finished three feet from the hole securing another winning hole.  The match continued to the back side where Thompson maintained her great play closing out the match on the thirteenth hole winning 7 and 5. 

     Thompson will be invited to represent the Carolinas Golf Association in the  Mid-Atlantic Challenge Girls’ matches at Mid Pines Resort in Southern Pines, NC on August 1-2, 2009.

    

      

 

This annual junior championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
