Greenville, SC -- Final results of the 53rd Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship hosted by Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, SC on Thursday, July 2,  2009.  (Par 36-36--72, 5926 yards.) 

 

17-year-old Maureen Dunnagan of Lexington, SC won the Carolinas Junior Girls' Championship by a 6 & 4 margin over fellow classmate Kathryn Miranda of Lexington, SC.  "I don't think it's sunk in yet," said Dunnagan.  "My main goal at the beginning of the tournament was to just make it into the championship flight.  I never thought I would be the one standing at the end holding the trophy."  Maureen faced not only a tough opponent in her morning semi-final match but she had to play against her cousin, Danielle Dunnagan also of Lexington, SC.  "Usually, when we play together we have lots of laughs and cut up but today was a lot different.  We were both a lot more serious.  It was kind of weird,"  Maureen said with a smile.  When asked what this win meant to her she simply stated "This is what I have worked so hard for.  I really wanted this."  Dunnagan and Miranda are now eligible to represent the Carolinas in the Mid-Atlantic Challenge that will be held August 1-2, 2009 at Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club in Southern Pines, NC.   

 

Players were placed into flights and competed at match play for the championship.
