News and Press Releases:

Mother Nature Wins 43rd Carolinas Father-Son Championship

Carthage, NC – Final results of the 43rd Father-Son Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Little River Golf and Resort, Carthage, NC on Friday, July 31, 2009 (par 36-36—72, 6619 yards).

Mother Nature was the winner at this year’s Carolinas Father-Son Championship. Due to continuous thunderstorms in the Moore County area on Friday the Carolinas Father-Son Championship was unable to crown a champion for the first time in the event’s 43 year history.

Due to the conditions of competition where the event consisted of two nine-hole stipulated rounds, the CGA was able to complete nine holes for the B division and C division. The A division did not complete nine holes with some teams never having the ability to start play due to the severe weather.

The original plan was for the C division to complete all 18 holes and the B division to play nine holes. But after a three-hour weather delay which saw heavy downpours and lightning, the 17th and 18th holes were unplayable due to casual water thus forcing the CGA at 6:15pm to revert back to nine-hole scores for the C division. The final groups were able to complete their front nine round thus completing the event for the B division.

Teams in the A division will receive a refund of their championship entry fee.

Flight winner’s merchandise certificates are available in the Little River Golf Shop. Certificates are valid until July 31, 2010. Winners may either stop by the club or call the Little River golf shop at 910-949-4600 to redeem their certificates. The club is offering merchandise specials to Father-Son participants. Inquire with the Little River golf staff.

This championship is conducted the by the Carolinas Golf Association which is celebrating its 100th year of serving amateur golf in the Carolinas.

ESTRIDGES AIMING FOR A REPEAT VICTORY IN CGA'S 43RD FATHER-SON CHAMPIONSHIP

WEST END, NC (7/27/09) - Mack and Chris Estridge will attempt to become the seventh team to win the title twice when the 43rd Carolinas Golf Association Father-Son Championship is played July 31st on five Pinehurst area golf courses.

Mack, a 60-year-old Pinehurst resident who works at Foxfire Resort in the N.C. Sandhills, and Chris, a 42-year-old Indian Trail resident who is part-owner of a clothing store, won the championship last year at Legacy Golf Links in Aberdeen, NC. The Estridges posted a 7-under-par 65 in the modified alternate shot event to win by one stroke as they matched the all-time record low score set by Pete and Chris Parker of Winston-Salem in 2001, also at the Legacy.

The only two-time winners of the Father-Son are Billy Joe and Chuck Patton in 1969 and 1972; Bill and Billy Booe in 1979 and 1982; Claude and Eric Lawhon in 1973 and 1980; Steve and Steve Isley Jr. in 1986 and 1987; Ron and Chris Schmid in 1992 and 1993; and Phil and Brian Smith in 1997 and 2000.

The Father-Son, which this year attracted 253 teams of dads and their male offspring in assorted combinations of age and ability, will be played at Mid Pines Inn & GC and Longleaf Golf Club, both in Southern Pines, Legacy Golf Links in Aberdeen, Little River Golf Resort in Carthage and Seven Lakes Country Club.

Twelve divisions will compete at the five different venues, with division assignments based on a composite of team handicaps. Included in the 12 divisions are two special brackets - one for teams with sons ages 11 and under and another in which one of the team members is a professional golfer.

The Estridges and 43 other teams will compete for the championship this year at a new venue, Little River Golf Resort near Carthage, NC. Little River replaced Foxfire Resort in this year's course lineup.

The professional winners from last year are also in the 2009 field. Drew and Andy Davis of Fletcher, NC won the division with a 4-under-par 68.

FORMAT

Each team plays alternate shot except that both team members hit from each tee and then select the ball to be played. A team must complete the hole with the ball selected. Amateur teams with players 11 years and younger compete at one site in a net handicap division. Team handicap index is computed by adding 2/3 of the lower handicap index to 1/3 of the higher handicap index. If eligible, and at the team's option, an 11 and under team may compete for the overall championship but must play from the championship tees. Course assignment and flight is determined by team handicap index.
