Final Round Results

Raleigh, NC - 18 year old Jack Fields of Southern Pines, fired a course-record 8 under par 63 to win the North Carolina Amateur Championship at Raleigh Country Club. He was seven shots back entering the final round.

Fields, who is enrolling in the University of North Carolina this fall, was the only golfer under par for the championship with a 283 total. 22 year old Zack Byrd of Calabash finished alone in second, one back.

Third-round leader Reed Darsie of Chapel Hill who has just completed his stint as a UNC golfer finished with an even-par 71 to finish third.

Fields’ round included an eagle on the par 5 8^th and a rare double-eagle on the par-5 15^th. He hit three wood into both greens.

“I was really disappointed in the way I had been hitting my three-wood last week and was ready to trade it in,” said Fields the state high school 4A champion. “However after hitting those two shots I am going to hang onto to it for a while!”

Fields started the day slowly with some good up and downs. But pars gave way to birdies for nines of 31-32. His bogeys came on 10 and17.

Fields attributed his win partly to dad Mike who was his caddy.

“Dad kept me calm and it was nice having him on the bag on Father’s Day as well.”

The North Carolina Amateur Championship is one of 31 conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
