DANVILLE, VA. –– The eight-player Virginia-Maryland team won four final-day singles matches and halved another encounter, but fell a point shy as Carolinas claimed the 7th Mid-Atlantic Girls’ Challenge, which concluded on Sunday at Danville Golf Club.

 

Trailing 3-1 after first day four-ball matches, Virginia-Maryland posted a 4˝-3˝ victory, but Carolinas’ three-and-a-half point total in singles was enough for a 6˝-5˝ win. A team of juniors mixing Virginia and Maryland players against their North and South Carolina counterparts competed in the event.

 

Virginia-Maryland posted victories in the opening two matches, with recent VSGA Junior Girls’ repeat winner Jessica Hollandsworth posting a 6 and 4 win over Courtney Taylor (Gastonia, N.C.). Meanwhile, in the second match of the day, Caroline Sweet (Bowie, Md.) bested Hayley Hammond (Mooresville, N.C.), 3 and 1. Hollandsworth and Sweet, who were paired together in first day four-ball matches, paced the team over the weekend, with each player supplying a team-leading two points.

 

Carolinas outscored their opponents 2˝-˝ in a mid-round stretch, with South Carolina Junior Girls’ champion Rachel Uremovich (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) ousting Kaitlyn Rohrback (Crofton, Md.), 3 and 1 in match three. One match later, Vanessa Koechli (Greer, S.C.) got past Elizabeth Brightwell (Nellysford, Va.), scoring a 2 and 1 win. The only halve of the day came in match five in the Lauren Greenlief (Oakton, Va.)-Anna Martin (Piedmont, S.C.) encounter.

 

Virginia-Maryland posted wins in matches six and seven. Sue Hwang (Ellicott City, Md.) notched a 1-up victory over Virginia Mayer (Charlotte, N.C.), while Amanda Steinhagen (Oakton, Va.) recorded a 5 and 4 win over Elizabeth Thompson (Charleston, S.C.). Also for Carolinas, reigning Carolinas Golf Association Junior Girls’ champion Haley Stephens (Greer, S.C.) defeated Karishma Thiagaraj (Rockville, Md.), 6 and 5.   

 

Uremovich, Koechli and Stephens helped to lead Carolinas over the course of the two-days of matches, recording a team-best two points.                    

 

Carolinas now owns a 5-1-1 all-time series lead in the event.
