Semifinal and Final Results

Wilmington, NC – Ben Kohles of Cary, NC won the Carolinas Amateur Championship defeating Kyle Wilson of Mt. Airy, NC, 3 and 2 at Cape Fear Country Club.

Kohles, a recent graduate of Green Hope High School, overcame an early deficit to take the title. Wilson took an early 2-up lead before Kohles evened the match at the turn. Kohles dominated the back nine with wins on 10, 12 and 14 before closing the match with halved pars on 16.

Kohles and Wilson, both 18, will enter college this fall at the University of Virginia and Western Carolina University respectively.

The semifinals were contested in the morning as Wilson ousted Tripp McAllister of Lake City, SC, 1 up and Kohles handily defeated Scott Harvey of Greensboro, NC 4 and 3.

Due to thunderstorm delays earlier in the week, the tournament’s final match was reduced from 36 to 18 holes in order to accommodate a Sunday finish.

The Carolinas Amateur was first played in 1910 and is one of the oldest amateur championships in the country. Cape Fear Country Club is one of five charter members of the Carolinas Golf Association.
