Mack and Chris Estridge Win 42nd Carolinas Father-Son Championship

Aberdeen, NC (7/25/08) – Mack and Chris Estridge tied the tournament record of 65 to win the 42nd Carolinas Father-Son Championship at Legacy Golf Links.  Their 7-under par effort included 7 birdies and no bogeys.

Mack, 59 works at Foxfire Resort and son Chris, 41 is part-owner of a clothing store.

Chris, who finished runner-up in consecutive years at the North Carolina Junior Championship (’83 and ’84) was thrilled with his dad’s putting effort.

“I hit it close and Dad made all the putts,” said Chris. “The longest putt we made was 10 feet.”

The Estridges, who began playing in the Father-Son when Chris was a junior took a hiatus and just recently returned to the Father-Son arena.

The duo began the day with a birdie-birdie start which gained momentum for the rest of the day.

“”We both just played well today, that’s what it boiled down to,” said Mack.  “It was a lot of fun.”

Finishing alone in second was Jim and Brent Pridgen of Jamestown, NC and Winston-Salem respectively who fell one stroke short by carding a six-under par 66.

Defending champions Jack and Brent Parrish of Clinton, NC posted a two-under par 70 to finish in a tie for eighth place.

This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.

PARRISHES BREAK FAMILY TRADITION TO DEFEND CGA FATHER-SON TITLE

WEST END, NC (7/21/08) - Jackie Parrish of Clinton, NC usually alternates playing with his two grown sons in the Carolinas Golf Association's Father-Son Championship. One year, he plays with older son Jack Jr., the next with younger son Brent.

But after winning the Father-Son at Foxfire's West course last year with Brent, who is the best golfer in this family of talented golfers, the elder Parrish had to break tradition for the 42nd Father-Son, which will be played July 25th on five Pinehurst area courses. Instead of giving Jack Jr. his usual turn, Jackie, the general manager at Coharie Country Club in Clinton, will once again play with Brent as they attempt to defend their title in this modified alternate shot event.

Jack Jr. agreed that it was only appropriate, since another victory by the Parrishes would make them only the seventh team In history to win the title two times.

The 18-hole event, with a field of nearly 300 teams, will be played at Foxfire Resort's West Course in Foxfire Village, Legacy Golf Links in Aberdeen, Longleaf Golf & Country Club in Southern Pines, Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club in Southern Pines and Seven Lakes Country Club in Seven Lakes. The championship division will battle at the Legacy this year.

Twelve divisions will compete at the five different venues, with division assignments based on a composite of team handicaps.

There are two special divisions - one for teams with sons ages 11 and under and another in which one of the team members is a professional golfer.

The Parrishes shot a three-under-par 69 last year at Foxfire, which tied them with three other duos at the end of regulation play. The elder Parrish then holed the winning birdie putt on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff after son Brent knocked his wedge approach shot to five feet.

The only father-sons to win the title twice are Billy Joe and Chuck Patton of Morganton, NC in 1969 and 1972; Bill and Billy Booe of Charlotte in 1979 and 1982; Claude and Eric Lawhon of Advance, NC in 1973 and 1980; Steve and Steve Isley of Burlington, NC in 1986 and 1987; Ron and Chris Schmid of Durham in 1992 and 1993; and Phil and Brian Smith of Apex, NC in 1997 and 2000.

The tournament record score is 65 by Pete and Chris Parker of Winston-Salem, NC at Legacy Golf Links in 2001.

FORMAT

Each team plays alternate shot except that both team members hit from each tee and then select the ball to be played. A team must complete the hole with the ball selected. Amateur teams with players 11 years and younger compete at one site in a net handicap division. Team handicap index is computed by adding 2/3 of the lower handicap index to 1/3 of the higher handicap index.

If eligible, and at the team's option, an 11 and under team may compete for the overall championship but must play from the championship tees. Course assignment and flight is determined by team handicap index.

ELIGIBILITY

Entry is open to any team comprised of a father and son, stepfather and stepson, or grandfather and grandson. At least one member of each team must be a legal resident of one of the Carolinas, be a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA), have a current USGA handicap index at a CGA member club or is a golf professional employed at a CGA member club.

A team is eligible if one partner is an amateur member of a CGA member club or if one partner is a golf professional employed by a CGA member club. The minimum age for entry is 8 years old as of the tournament date.

PRIZES

Merchandise is distributed to the top teams in each amateur division and to overall amateur champions. Open (professional) division merchandise is distributed based on the size of Open field. Ties for prizes are split except for the overall championship and the Open division, which are determined by an on-course playoff.
