VIRGINIAS WINS THE 26th VIRGINIAS-CAROLINAS JUNIOR MATCHES

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (8/10/08) -- The eight-golfer Virginias team won five of eight final day singles matches against their Carolinas counterparts to claim the 26th Virginias-Carolinas Junior Matches, which concluded today at The Club at Irish Creek. One point was available per each match.

With the matches tied 4-4 after the first day, Virginias outscored their opponents 5-3 in singles to record a 9-7 victory. Virginias claimed its second straight win in the series and notched its first win on Carolinas soil in the matches since 2004 when the team triumphed at The Old North State Club in New London, N.C. The matches annually rotate between Virginias and Carolinas sites.

On the final day, the two teams split the first two matches, with central Virginian Nicholas Austin (Midlothian, Va.) triumphing in the opening match, while Andy Knox (Cary, N.C.) scored a win in match two for Carolinas.

Virginias then registered four victories in a five-match span from Nos. 3-7 to help the team retain the Vinny Giles Trophy, honoring the Virginia amateur legend.

Two-time reigning VSGA Junior Match Play champion Michael Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) got past Michael Marshburn (Cary, N.C.), 2 and 1 in match three to start the surge. After Hayden Letien (Sumter, S.C.) posted a win in match four, Virginias won the next three matches. In match five, Roanoke's Jack Wilkes scored a 3 and 2 win over Mark Joye (Columbia, S.C.), while Richmond's Matt Ball Jr. bested Justin Clement (Lexington, N.C.), 2 up, in the following encounter.

In perhaps Virginias most impressive performance of the final day, U.S. Junior Am finalist Evan Beck (Virginia Beach, Va.) continued his strong play, wiping out two-time South Carolina Junior Amateur champion Crawford Reeves (Greenville, S.C.), 8 and 7. For Virginias, Beck and Austin went undefeated in the matches, with each helping to contribute a team-best three points each over the weekend.

Carolinas scored one of its three wins in the last match of the day, with Ben Kohles (Cary, N.C.) besting Brinson Paolini (Virginia Beach, Va.) in a close match, 1 up.

26th CAROLINAS-VIRGINIAS JUNIOR TEAM MATCHES SET FOR REVAMPED KANNAPOLIS COURSE, AUG. 9-10

WEST END, NC (8/7/08) The Carolinas Golf Association, in conjunction with the Virginia State Golf Association, will conduct the 26th Carolinas-Virginias Junior Team Matches at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, NC, August 9-10.

The matches are a Ryder Cup-like event featuring a team of eight junior golfers from the Carolinas against their counterparts from the Virginias. The matches consist of alternate shot (foursomes), four-ball match play, and singles competition.

The Virginias team won 10-6 last year at Boonsboro CC in Lynchburg, VA to reclaim the Vinny Giles Trophy and cut its deficit in the series to 14-10-1. The Carolinians opened a big lead early in this series that began in 1983, but the Virginias team has won six of the last 10 matchups.

Austin Reeves of Greenville, SC received the David Parrott award, which is given annually to the Carolinas Team player who displays excellence in sportsmanship, ability, and academic excellence.

The award is presented by Dr. Larry Parrott of Camden, SC in honor of his son David, who died of leukemia in 1982 at the age of 16.

Carolinas Junior champion Michael Marshburn of Cary, NC, N.C.

Junior champion Justin Clement of Lexington, NC, 2007 and 2008 S.C. Junior champion Crawford Reeves of Greenville, SC and 2007 Dogwood State Junior champion Ben Kohles of Cary, NC are headliners for the Carolinas team this year.

Brinson Paolini of Virginia Beach, who repeated as VSGA Junior champion this summer and won the Virginia State Amateur as well, and two-time VSGA Junior Match Play winner Michael Moyers of Stanardsville are expected to play starring roles for the Virginias side.

The competition will be staged on the par-72, 7099-yard Club at Irish Creek, which re-opened in 2007 after a complete re-design by Davis Love III. The course, built on the site of the former Kannapolis Country Club, has drawn rave reviews for its look and playability.
