New London, NC -- Final round results of the 41st Twin States Junior Girls' Championship hosted by Old North State Club in New London, NC on August 1, 2007. 5853 yards, Par 36-36--72.
Local Old North State member Virginia Mayer of Charlotte, NC wins her first CGA major by winning the 41st Twin States Junior Girls' Championship by three shots over runner-up, Madison Overbey of High Point, NC. Mayer took medalist honors after the first round and never looked back. Mayer didn't feel the pressure of being the "local favorite" and says that everything just clicked for her today. "I just played really well, I didn't make too many mistakes and my irons were really, really good," said Mayer. "I had a few three putts but other than that I felt really good out there." By winning this championship Mayer qualifies for the 2008 Mid-Atlantic Team Challenge that will be held in Virginia next year. "That was my goal throughout my whole junior career, I just wanted to make that team and now I did it! I am so excited." Ironically, Mayer was inquiring after the first round about how to make the team and was told that she had to win some tournaments, one of them being the Twin States Championship. Mayer simply replied, "I don't win tournaments." Good thing she was wrong.
Mayer will be a senior come this fall and has yet to decide where she will go to college.
In the sub-junior division (9 holes only) Louise Oxner of Greenville, SC won by shooting a 2-day total 79. This division is for girls 13 years of age or younger.
The field was placed into flights by first round score.
This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
