After seven grueling matches between the two teams, in the end the second to last match of the day between Erica Creed of Colfax, NC and Alex Brown of Potomac, MD proved to be the match to watch as it would determine who would earn the honor to hold the Nielsen Trophy for the ensuing year.  Creed was three down after three holes when she first started the day but a momentum swing after the sixth hole would get her back to all square.  Creed was then 2 up and lost the par 5-15th hole to go 1-up heading into sixteen where the two traded pars and went on to the tough par-3 17th.  Brown hit a wonderful shot to about 10 feet while Creed landed hole high slightly off the green.  Creed would safely make a par and could only watch while Brown went on to drain her putt for birdie and take the match to eighteen all square while everyone’s eyes were on them.

Creed’s drive found the fairway and landed well into the dogleg while Brown had to punch out from around the trees.  In the end Creed won the hole with a five while Brown missed a shot putt to give the Maryland/Virginia squad a ½ point and their first win in three years of match-ups.  Creed’s putt sealed the deal for full point for the Carolinas team and the matches resulted in a tie with six points being earned by each team. Due to the tie, the Carolinas team will retain the trophy for yet another year.  This is the first time in the six year history of the event that the matches resulted in a tie.

Carolinas leads the series 4-1-1.
