Final Results

Greensboro, NC-- Perhaps the greatest pressure brings out the best performances. Defending Champion Vince Hatfield of Greenwood, S.C. defeated George Bryan IV of Chapin, S.C. on the second play-off hole to capture the 2005 Carolinas Junior Championship and claim his third Carolinas Golf Association title in three years. Hatfield and Bryan were paired together in the final group and found themselves playing extra holes after Bryan made birdie on the last two holes and a final round 66 to tie Hatfield, who shot 69. Both players birdied the first play-off hole and both found their tee shots right of the green on the second. However, Hatfield hit his chip shot from the bunker lip to 18 inches for a tap-in and Bryan could not convert his par-putt attempt. The win for Hatfield completed a three-year run of championships, including two Carolinas Junior and the S.C. Junior Match Play. Bryan IV, who will compete in the 2005 U.S. Amateur Championship, shot a 4-under 30 on the back 9 due to two birdies and an eagle in the final 5 holes.

Bruce Woodall and Patrick Rada both shot 65 to card the lowest scores in the final round and finish 3^rd and 4^th, respectively. Wesley Bryan, George's brother and runner-up to Hatfield in the 2004 Championship, carded a final round 70 and finished alone in 9^th.

On the final hole of the play-off, Hatfield raised his arms in the air in relief after securing the win. "George played so well, especially on the back side. He was tough today and I am just relieved to win." Both Hatfield and Bryan will be invited to the Virginia-Carolinas Team Cup Matches that will be conducted on August 13^th-14^th in Richmond, Va.

The 2005 Carolinas Junior Championship was conducted at Greensboro Country Club at Irving Park, a Donald Ross design that offers scenic tee-shot views and tight fairways accented with majestic houses and landscapes that made the Championship enjoyable for all the players. Although scores were low, the course caused problems for many players due to well placed bunkers and undulating greens.

The Carolinas Golf Association, serving amateur golf in the Carolinas since 1909, conducts the 2005 Carolinas Junior Championship.
