Charlotte, NC--Sixty-nine year old Barbara Young of Wilmington, NC birdied the first playoff hole to win the 4^th Women's Senior Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Raintree Country Club, North course, in Charlotte, NC on Wednesday.

Young, the first round leader, was hampered all day by an ailing hip. "My hip was hurting me", stated Young. "I was spinning off the ball because I was in pain."

After the front nine, Young and Clate Aydlett of Elizabeth City, NC were tied for the lead with Karen Ferree of Hilton Head, SC only four-strokes back.

Young and Aydlett struggled on the back-nine and each finished with a five-over par 41. That left the door open for Ferree, the 2001 CGA Women's Senior Player of the Year, to make a run for the championship. Ferree fired a one-over par 37 to tie for the 36-hole lead.

Young knew standing on the 18^th tee that she held a one-stroke lead over Ferree and Aydlett.

"I couldn't keep my hip from hurting and I duck-hooked my tee shot out of bounds to the left", Young said. That wayward tee shot led Young to a double-bogey six and opened the door for Aydlett and Ferree. But Aydlett and Ferree both bogeyed the 18^th hole to finish in a three-way tie for the championship.

On the first sudden-death playoff hole, Young hit her third shot on the par 5 first hole to 10 feet. Aydlett and Ferree both were unsuccessful with their birdie putts. Young then sank her downhill putt to win the championship.

This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
