HICKORY, NC -- Don Taylor of Bluffton, SC fired a final round 73 to take the 41^st Carolinas Senior Amateur championship at Lake Hickory Country Club in Hickory, North Carolina. Taylor started the day two back of overnight leader Cliff Cunningham of Monroe, NC but a front nine 36 gave him a lead that he never gave up, although the road was rough coming home. Taylor felt he was in the hunt after a birdie at the par four 13^th, "I knew after the birdie got me to one under for the day, I was close, but then after the 14^th I wasn't sure anymore."

Taylor's double bogey on the par-4 14^th did shrink the lead to one over Cunningham and Vic Hannon of Camden, SC, but four pars were enough after Cunningham and Hannon went backwards on the difficult closing holes.

Richard Gwaltney of Taylorsville, NC closed with a 72 to finish tied for second with Cunningham, while Larry Boswell of Jamestown's final hole birdie gave him solo fourth, one ahead of Hannon and Bill Benson of Wilkesboro, NC.

Defending champion Bob Kulp of Winston-Salem, NC fired a final round 80 to finish tied for 14^th at 231.

On Wednesday, the super seniors division wrapped up with Ross Horton of Branchville, SC winning the inaugural title with a two day total of 151, with Ted Gaston of Denver, NC and Jack Sweatt of Rock Hill, SC sharing second place.

This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
