Spartanburg, SC--Final championship match play results of the 30^th South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by the Country Club of Spartanburg.

Championship Match

Spartanburg, SC -- Rising Clemson University freshman Nick Biershenk of Boiling Springs defeated Taylor Hough of Spartanburg Sunday, 2 and 1, for the title of the 30^th South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship. The championship, conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association, was played at the Country Club of Spartanburg.

Biershenk took the morning lead in the 36-hole final match with birdies at the second and third holes. Hough sank a five-foot birdie putt at the ninth hole to cut the margin to two holes at the turn. Biershenk's birdie at the 11^th gave him another three-hole lead, but Hough responded with wins at the 12^th and 18^th holes.

Hough, 33, weary from extra-matches in the three previous rounds, rebounded in the afternoon round. He won the 22^nd, 25^th and 26^th holes to take a one-hole lead. Biershenk responded with a four-foot birdie putt at the 27^th hole. The players traded the 28^th and 29^th holes. Biershenk hit a 60-degree sand-wedge shot to within two-feet of the hole at the 34^th hole to re-establish his lead. He reached the green of the par-five 35^th hole in two shots and two putted for the match.

"I missed a five-foot birdie putt (on the 33^rd hole), and I knew that would come back to haunt me," Hough said. "Nick played a real good match."

Biershenk, winner of the 2001 South Carolina 4A High School title, said he was troubled by his short game during the match. "But I hit that shot at the 34^th hole that was really important. That gave me the lead for the last time."

Biershenk was six under par for 35 holes.
