LUMBERTON, NC -- Barden Berry of Kinston defeated Bradley Leeper of Carrboro by a 5 & 3 margin in the final match of the 35th North Carolina Junior Championship at PineCrest Country Club in Lumberton.

Leeper, 17, defeated Matt Renegar of State Road in the semifinals, going 16 holes without a bogey in his 3 & 2 victory to advance to the final.

Berry, 16, cruised past Chris Evans of Greensboro, 5 & 4 in his semifinal match. Evans saw come to a close a run that included an opening round victory over number one seeded and defending champion Sean Moore of Marshville.

By making the final match, Leeper and Berry qualify for the Carolinas junior team who will attempt to win back the Vinny Giles Cup from the Virginias team at Mid Pines and Pine Needles in Southern Pines, NC August 10-11.

In the girls' championship, Jessica Hauser of Germanton won in 19 holes after a furious comeback by Esther Gweon of Charlotte forced extra holes. Gweon, who bogied the first extra hole, shot two-under on the back nine to erase a four down deficit and force extra holes. Hauser, who lost in the final a year ago, was impressed with Gweon. "That was the best I have ever seen anyone play, the way she came back on me," commented Hauser.

By making the semifinals Gweon, Boyle, Hauser and Ashley Mylton of Charlotte qualify for the Carolinas girls team which will take on a team from Virginia and Maryland, August 10-11 at Independence Golf Club in Richmond, Virginia.

On Thursday, the boys 13 and under division wrapped up with Kevin O'Connell of Raleigh defeating defending champion Bruce Woodall of Yanceyville in the final match.

A total of 225 players participated in the North Carolina Junior championship. This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
