Winston-Salem, NC - Derek Brown of Walnut Cove fired a final-round two under par 69 to capture the 42nd North Carolina amateur Championship at Forsyth Country Club.

Brown bettered defending champion Chad Wifong of Thomasville and Jason Harris of Clemmons by four strokes to capture his first state amateur championship. Brown, a golfer at UNC Wilmington, shot one-under on each nine for his two-under par 69.

Brown started the round tied for the lead with Wake Forest golfer Chad Wilfong at 9-under par.

Wilfong took the early lead with a birdie on the par-4 2nd hole. However Wilfong bogeyed the next hole and continued to share the lead with Brown who started with four pars. Brown then birdied the par-5 5th hole and Wilfong parred. Brown never trailed for the remainder of the round.

On the tenth tee, Brown held a two-stroke lead and continued with pars until stumbling with a bogey on 14. However Wilfong also bogeyed the 14th.

Brown closed the deal with birdies on 15 and 18 for the four-shot win.

"This is sweet", said Brown, winner of two collegiate events. "I just tried to hit to the middle of the greens and two putt because I felt that would be enough."

Brown felt that the turning point of the final round was early on the back nine.

"The twelfth hole was a turning point when I got up-and-down for par and Chad three-putted for bogey. That was really a momentum swing."

Brown, who ranked 9th in last year's NCAA putting statistics, felt he needed to make a lot of pars to take home the win.

"I felt if I could birdie 15 and then par in, I would have a good chance of winning", said Brown.

He did one better than that with a birdie on 18.

A highlight of the day was provided by third-round leader Chris Logan who, playing in the final group, aced the 165-yard par three 14th hole. Logan used an 8-iron to accomplish the feat.

The top 30 golfers and ties earn exemptions into next year's North Carolina Amateur championship.

This event is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
