Final Results
Foxfire Village, N.C. - Paul and Phillip Simson of Raleigh, won the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to capture the 36th Carolinas Father-Son Championship at Foxfire Resort and Country Club’s Grey Course.
The Simson’s secured the win with a 33-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole by son Phillip.
The Simson’s edged Gene and Jeff Spencer of Blythewood, S.C. Both teams were knotted at 3-under par 69 after 18 holes of regulation play.
The Simsons got off to a rocky start on their first hole of the day with a recovery of par from the half-dry water hazard. Paul, winner of 10 previous Carolinas Golf Association events, and son Phillip steadied with seven more pars on their next seven holes. They converted a 10-foot birdie on the par-4 ninth to turn at one under par.
On their back nine, the Simsons birdied the 14th and 16th holes to finish their bogeyless round at 3-under par.
This win marks the eleventh CGA championship for father Simson, president of Stan Taylor Insurance.
"This is awesome," said the elder Simson. "My son Phillip has seen me win a few of my titles as a spectator, but it is great to have him on my team and to win this one with him. We have been wanting this title for some time."
A rising junior at Wake Forest University, son Phillip agreed.
"I was nervous on that first playoff hole, but I kept positive thoughts in my mind," said son Phillip. "I just remembered similar putts I had made back home at North Ridge Country Club and kept those thoughts in my mind during the putt."
430 teams (860 golfers) competed over five Pinehurst area golf courses in this yearly Carolinas Golf Association event.
