SOUTHERN PINES, NC -- Ryan Sypniewski of Radford, Virginia closed out a four-year career with the Virginias Junior team with a 2 1/2 to 1/2 victory over 2002 Carolinas Junior champion Sean Moore of Marshville, NC to help send the Carolinas to their second loss in a row in the annual Carolinas versus the Virginias Junior team matches played at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club and Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club in Southern Pines, NC. Sypniewski, who will attend Virginia Tech, is the only player in the series from either team to play four years and leads the all time points earners with 25 1/2. The win is Virginias fifth in the last seven years, bringing the all-time series to 12-8 in favor of the Carolinas.

The first round of play saw the Virginias win three of four four-ball matches and post a 17-7 lead going into the singles matches. The Carolinas front nine comeback was squashed when both Sypniewski and Chris McCartin of Alexandria, VA won the front of matches seven and eight for their team. Daryl Chappell's win on the back nine over Bradley Leeper was the clinching points for the Virginias, although Leeper won the match by a 2-1 margin.

These matches are conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association and the Virginia State Golf Association, competing annually for the Vinny Giles Trophy.
