SANFORD, NC - The North Carolina golf professionals built an early 18 hole lead and capitalized on that margin to win the 7th Annual Tar Heel Cup Matches over the North Carolina amateurs, 26-10 at Tobacco Road Golf Course.
Using two shutouts, the professionals took a 9-3 lead after the morning Four-Ball round. The afternoon singles matches also proved fruitful for the professionals as three of the professionals won all available points to help their team take the singles matches, 17-7. The professionals won the event, 26-10
In the 36-hole match, players compete in a Four-Ball format in the morning and singles in the afternoon round. Each side can win 1 point on the front 9, back 9 and overall 18 holes each with a total of 3 points in each match.
The 2001 Tar Heel Cup competition marks the second CGA major championship held at Tobacco Road GC which opened in 1998.
The record stands at 5-2 in favor of the professionals.
The event is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association and the Carolinas PGA
