Corolla, NC--Glenn Lassiter, 66, of Robbins, NC and Bill Cox, 66, of Gastonia, NC combined to shoot a final round seven-under par 64 at Nags Head Golf Links to win the 33rd Senior Four-Ball Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association. Nags Head Golf Links plays to a par 71.
This championship is the fourth time that Lassiter and Cox has won this event. They were victorious in 1991 at Prestwick Golf Club in Myrtle Beach, SC, in 1995 at the Country Club of Orangeburg in Orangeburg, SC, and in 1996 at River Hills Country Club in Lake Wylie, SC.
"It was just one of those days where everything fell," stated Cox. "Yesterday we could not make a short putt."
The tandem combined for eight birdies and one bogey in today's final round. Cox made birdies at holes #6, 9, 11, 13, and 16. While Lassiter assisted his partner with three birdies of his own at holes #2, 4, and most notably at hole #12.
"Glenn made one of the best birdies that I have ever seen on hole #12 (411 yard, par 4). He hit a three wood from the fairway to four feet and sank the putt," noted Cox. "I knew it was going to be a good day when he made that one."
Their lone bogey came on hole #18 where Cox played himself out of the hole with an errant tee shot while Lassiter three-putted the last green.
"I was getting ready to putt and this buttterfly flew right over my putter blade…it distracted me," said Lassiter. "I left the par putt one inch short of the hole."
That bogey almost proved costly because still on the course was Herb Conway and Hal Dugenske of Whispering Pines, NC whom were only one-stoke off the lead. Conway had a 50 foot birdie attempt to tie the event. His birdie effort just missed the hole to the right and secured the championship for Lassiter and Cox.
"Not a bad tournament for a couple of sixty-six year-olds," said Lassiter.
First round leaders Lea Couch of Bahama, NC and Louis Wheless of Louisburg, NC shot a final round three-under par 68 to finish in a tie for third.
The Senior Four-Ball Championship is open to male members of a Carolinas Golf Association member club and minimum 55 years of age.
This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
