China Grove--Bobby Clark of Asheville and Cliff Cunningfham of Monroe overcame a four-stroke deficit to win the 1st North Carolina Senior Partners Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Warrior Golf Club in China Grove on Thursday, August 30.
Cunningham, the 1997 United States Senior Amateur Champion, fired a seven-under par 64 that included eight birdies and one bogey. Clark, the 1999 Carolinas Senior Champion, helped his team with a one-under par 70. Cunningham and Clark have combined together to win 10 Carolinas Golf Association championships.
"Cliff played really well today", stated Clark. "Actually we played really well all week. This (Warrior Golf Club) is a great senior golf course. It's not too long but you have to hit all the shots."
Their three-day total of sixteen-under par, 268 total, gave them an eight-stroke margin of victory over rounds one and two leaders Buddy Baldwin of Asheville and Jimmy Baldwin of Arden.
"He (Clark) read all the putts", stated Cunningham. "We got it going early today. We just did not make any mistakes, played very steady, and made some birdies".
This event marks the inaugural year for the championship. The 54-hole event utilized three different scoring formats. Round one was four-ball stroke play (best ball), round two was modified alternate shot and round three was a team aggregate score where both team members 18-hole scores counted.
This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
