34th North Carolina Junior Boys and Girls Championship June 19-22, 2001 Old North State Club, New London, North Carolina |
NEW LONDON, NC-- Sean Moore of Marshville outlasted Rodney Thomas of Lexington in the final match of the North Carolina Junior championship with a 7-foot par putt on the 20th hole at Old North State Club in New London, North Carolina. Moore, who fired a qualifying 66 for medalist honors, won the 18th hole of the match to send it to overtime. The final match, which took place over two days due to a weather suspension, was all square on the 17th hole when resumed on Saturday morning. Thomas began with a par on the par-three seventeenth to take a one up lead to the final hole, but his second shot found the water hazard and he could manage only bogey to Moore's par, sending the match to extra holes. Thomas drained a 15-foot par putt to gain a halve on the 19th hole, but his 20 footer for par on the last hole didn't fall, setting up Moore's clinching par.
Michelle Jarman of Wilmington defeated Jessica Hauser 5 & 4 in the final match of the girls division. Jarman only needing to play fourteen holes to seal the victory, will hold possession of the Linda Marsh trophy for the ensuing year.
