*won on first playoff hole.
Aiken, SC--Wynn Solle of Pinehurst, North Carolina defeated Michael Carlisle of Aiken, South Carolina on the first playoff hole with a par to win the 21st Mid-Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, South Carolina.
Solle, 44 and a semi-retired project manager, is used to playing on older golf courses. "Coming to a great golf course like Palmetto is a real treat", stated Solle. "They just do not build them (golf courses) like they used to. Being a member at Pinehurst Country Club and playing number 2 a lot really helped me." Palmetto Golf Club was founded in 1892.
"I am very happy to have won this championship, although I wish we could have played all three rounds." The championship was shortened to 36-holes in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the United States this week.
Solle has had a very productive summer. He won the Pinehurst Country Club Championship and the Moore County (NC) Amateur plus had a hole-in-one back in April. "It's just been a great year", he said.
"This is only the second time that I have played in this championship", Solle remarked. "Last year was the first major tournament that I have played in since college".
Carlisle, the golf coach at USC-Aiken, came out of nowhere by firing a tournament low round of five-under par 66 to finish at even par. He was the leader in the clubhouse for most of the day. Carlisle's round included six birdies versus one bogey. Carlisle is a member at Palmetto Golf Club.
First round leader Robert Wooten of Winston-Salem, North Carolina struggled in his final round by shooting a six-over par 77 to finish in a tie for thirteenth place.
2000 Mid-Amateur champion, Keith Harris of Concord, North Carolina finished with a 145 total and tied for sixth place.
The top 30 players and ties received merchandise and will be exempt for the 2002 Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship at Alamance Country Club in Burlington, North Carolina. Some of the top 30 players declined their merchandise and almost $1400 will be donated to the American Red Cross to help with the disaster relief efforts in New York and Washington, D.C.
This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
