Freeport, Grand Bahama - Ray Womack and Jimmy Simmons of Burlington, NC became the first team to win the CGA Bahamas Four-Ball Championship three consecutive years.

Using seven final-day birdies, the Womack-Simmons team won the 5th annual event by two shots over Wayne Petty of Burlington, NC and Jack Nance of Pinehurst, NC.

With four teams within one shot of each other heading into the final day, Womack-Simmons scurried to a quick start at the Lucaya Country Club on day three with Womack birdieing four holes on the front nine, including the first three holes. The Alamance Country Club tandem took a two-shot lead over Petty and Nance with nine holes to play.

Simmons rallied on the back with birdies on 11, 15 and 17. Petty and Nance fought back to within one stroke after 14, but Simmons responded with his 15th hole birdie to increase the margin back to two. The defending champions countered Petty and Nance for the final three holes to win by the same margin.

Other winners included Mike Orr and Craig Brown in the Ol’ Pirate’s flight; Charles Canaday & John Nicholson, Burlington, NC in the Blackjack Flight; and Dot and C.D. Bounds of Wagram, NC in the BahamaMama flight.

The tournament was conducted at Lucaya Country Club and Our Lucaya Reef Course, home of the Senior PGA Tour Senior Slam.

Seventy-four people attended the excursion with 56 competing in the golf tournament.

The 2002 event is planned for February 20-24 and is open to members of a CGA club. Contact the CGA for more information.

The event is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
