DURHAM, N.C.-Mitch Adams of Cary won his first Carolinas Golf Association

title Sunday in the 7th North Carolina Mid-Amateur at Treyburn Country

Club.

Adams, 43, overcame a two-shot deficit to Macon Moye of Charlotte with a three-under-par 69 to claim a three-shot win over Steve Jones of Oak Ridge.

Even though Adams opened with a pair of par 72 rounds, he said the first

round was his best effort from tee to green. "I played very well in the

Carolinas Amateur here (at Treyburn) in 1993, and I tried to remember what

I did so well that week," Adams said. "I made a small putting adjustment

Saturday, mimicking what I did seven years ago, and my putting fell into

place. Today, when I looked at a putt, I felt like I was looking at ditch

to the hole."

Adams birdied three of the first eight holes while Moye, the 1998

champion, bogeyed three of the first eight. Adams maintained a three-shot

lead through most of the round but clinched the crown with birdies at the

13th and 14th holes.

Adams, a sales rep in the steel industry, shot 72-72-69--213. Jones, closing with 33 on the back nine, shot 71--216.

First-round leader Garland Yates of Asheboro took third place with 73--217. Kelly Miller of Southern Pines was fourth with 71--218.

Moye finished 78-220, sharing fifth place. Defending champion Bob Stanger of Durham had 73--221 and took eighth.
