NEW BERN, NC - John Marshall and Thomas Riley of Kinston used a last-hole
par
to edge Sherrill Britt of Pinehurst and Greg Powell of Whiteville to claim
the 5th North Carolina North Carolina Four-Ball Golf Championship at The
Emerald Golf Club. Riley parred the last hole, two putting from 25 feet, to
beat the Britt-Powell team, who took three shots to get down from 55 feet.
Both teams were 16-under par heading into the water-laden last hole.
Marshall and Riley shot a 69--200 for the one-stroke win. Britt and Powell
shot a closing 70 to nip Matt Lindley of Raleigh and Michael Bradley of
Holly
Springs by one.
"It was a total team effort", said Riley, a tobacco salesman. "John played
well today and I helped out some earlier in the week."
Marshall, an attorney, concurred, "It's great to play as a team for a
change.
We always play against each other back home."
The event is played under the best-ball format with the low score selected
for each hole.
The event is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
