BERMUDA RUN, NC--Keith Harris of Concord, North Carolina overcame a two-stroke deficit to defeat 1995 Mid-Amateur Champion Macon Moye of Charlotte, North Carolina and win the 20th Mid-Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Bermuda Run Country Club in Bermuda Run, North Carolina.
Harris, a sales representative for Chesapeake Display and Packaging, fired a final round two-under par 70 for a three-round total of 212. He made four birdies and two bogeys in his final round.
The tournament victory is the first CGA championship of Harris' career. "It feels great!", says Harris. "I have come close a couple of times in the state amateur. After nine years of trying, it’s a big thrill for me to win one".
Harris, 38, said that there were a couple of turning points in today's round. "Number 10 was huge. I made birdie and Macon did not so it cut his lead to two shots", stated Harris.
Moye would soon see his two-stroke lead disappear. After a double-bogey six on the 14th hole, Moye and Harris were tied for the lead. Both players made a par four on the 15th hole. But the 180 yard par 3, 16th hole was where Harris was able to take the lead after making a birdie. "My birdie at 16 was the turning point", according to Harris. "I figured Macon would birdie 17 but he didn’t and we both parred in".
Moye missed a 22-foot birdie opportunity on the 18th hole, and Harris easily two-putted from 12 feet to clinch the championship.
"I was just thinking one shot at a time, play steady and try to win", said Harris about his approach to the final round.
Harris' win gives him a spot on the Carolinas team that will compete against other amateur golfers from Virginia and West Virginia at the Carolinas-Virginias team matches at the Golden Horseshoe in Williamsburg, Virginia, November 3-5, 2000.
"That was my goal coming into this championship", says Harris, "I knew I needed a top five finish to make the team".
This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
