DUNCAN HOLDS OFF LATE CHARGE BY MARSLENDER TO WIN CAROLINAS JUNIOR BY THREE
GREENVILLE, SC, Thursday, July 27, 2000 -- Brian Duncan of nearby Travelers Rest, SC held off a late rally by Ward Marslender of Raleigh, NC to win the 51st Carolinas Junior Championship by three strokes.
For the tournament Duncan, fired rounds of 65-67-72--204, 12-under par, to Marslender's 9-under 69-68-70--207. In the process Duncan tied the tournament scoring record of 204 set a year ago by Bill Haas of Greenville, SC at Birkdale GC in Huntersville, NC.
Prior to the start of the final round it seemed all but certain that Duncan would cruise to an easy win after the 17-year-old fired opening rounds of 65 and 67 and led by five. In fact, Duncan and his Jim Furyk-like swing needed to shoot just 71 or better in the final round to break the all-time scoring record in the Junior (204), but midway through the back nine on Thursday, Duncan's thoughts were solely on holding off a charging Marslender.
The two front-runners made the turn on Thursday separated by seven strokes and Marslender admitted afterward that he figured his chances were all but over. But lightening struck on the par 5, 16th when Marslender birdied and Duncan bogeyed to trim the margin to just two shots.
"I got pretty juiced after that," Marslender said, "I think that's why I hit it over the green on seventeen." He igot up and down for his par on the par 3, but Duncan made birdie and carried An insurmountable three-stroke lead to eighteen.
"I figured I needed to birdie 17 after the bogey on 16," said the 6'1", 145 pound Duncan of his mindset at the time. He also admitted to thinking about the scoring record throughout the day. "Yeah, I was aware of it and I wanted to get it, but I'm happy to tie it."
Duncan will now head west to next week's US Junior in Portland, Oregon. "This gives me a lot of confidence heading into the Junior," Duncan said. "Winning this and last year's South Carolina Junior Match Play are really special to me."
Emmett Turner of Greewood,SC finished in third at 212, 4-under par.
IN the 14-15 division, Nick Hughey of Gaffney, SC fired a 1-under 71 on the final day to win by seven strokes over Zack Moran of Taylors, SC. Moran held the 36-hole lead but stumbled to an 83 on Thursday. Hughey's three-day total was 220, 4-over par.
In the 12-13 division Jamie Lightsey of Fort Mill, SC and B. J. Kelly of Charlotte, NC entered the final round tied for the lead, but finished four strokes apart with Lightsey claiming the title. Lightsey shot his second consecutive even par 72 and finished the tournament at 222, 6-over par.
Tripp McAllister of Lake City, SC won the 11-Under division when he overcame a five-stroke first round deficit to win by one. Austin Reeves of Greenville, SC led after the first day, but came up one shot short shooting rounds of 38-43-38 for a 119 total. McAllister roared back from an opening round 43 to shoot 37-38 for a 118 total.
After trailing first round leader Austin Reeves in the 11-Under division by five, Tripp McAllister of Lake City, SC roared back with rounds of 37 and 38 to win the division by one stroke over Reeves who hails from Greenville, SC.
