North Carolina Amateur Championship
Tanglewood Park (Championship Course), Clemmons, NC
June 10-13, 1999
Clemmons, June 13 – Dirk Fennie, 30, from Greensboro fired a 3-under par
67 (3-under 277 total) to win the 39th NC Amateur Golf Championship played
this year on the Championship Course at Tanglewood Park.
"I'm the State Am champ," Fennie said afterward. "I can't believe it. It
feels so good."
Fennie, who shot a tournament low 66 in the first round, entered the final
round trailing Reidsville's, Mike Goodes by two strokes. Goodes, the 1989
NC Amateur winner, posted an even par 70 in the final round—good for a
2-under total of 278. Press McPhaul from Raleigh, who played at NC State
from '92-'96, shot a 2-under 68 to tie Keith Waters (also from Raleigh) for
third at 280. Waters shot 69 in the final round.
Goodes, 42, began the day with a two-shot lead, but when he parred the par
5 5th and Fennie birdied it, the two were tied and the battle was on.
Fennie and Goodes matched pars until the par 3 12th where Goodes made a
critical mistake and Fennie snatched a lead that would never relinquish.
The pin on No. 12 was tucked on the left side of the green, dangerously
close to a pond. After Fennie landed his tee shot safely in the middle of
the green, Goodes pulled his 7-iron left of the flagstick and into the
water.
"I wasn't going for that pin," Goodes said. "I tried to hit a hard seven
[iron] and I came over it. I guess I swung too hard. You can't flirt with
that side and I did. I got what I deserved."
To Goodes credit, he followed up that bogey with a birdie on No. 13., but
Fennie matched him with a birdie of his own.
"When I birdied the next hole [No. 13] and he topped it—that was a great
birdie he made," Goodes said.
By the time the two teed off on the par 4 18th, Fennie owned a one-stroke
lead, but surprisingly wasn't sure where he stood in the tournament.
"I honestly didn't know where either of them [Goodes and Waters] stood,
although I kinda had a clue. I felt like it was better for me not to know."
When both Fennie and Goodes got up and down for par from just off the
green, Fennie was the 39th winner of the NC Amateur title.
"I just shook my head because I couldn't believe it," Fennie said. "This is
definitely the biggest tournament I've won."
This Championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
