WILSON, N.C.-- Three-time defending champion Cliff Cunningham of Monroe added a
two-under par 70 to his two day total of 141 to capture the 12th North Carolilna Senior Amateur
Championship contested at Wilson Country Club in Wilson. Cunningham finished eight strokes
ahead of the rest of the field. Eddie Hughes of Wilson, who finished fourth in 1996, missing a
playoff by a shot, had a 77 to bring his tournament total to 219. This is the second consecutive
year the North Carolina Senior Championship has been contested at Wilson Country Club. Ray
Newsome of Winston-Salem fired a third round 71, one under par, to jump into third place with
a three day total of 220. This championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
