Results of the Carolinas Senior Four-Ball at Pinehurst National Golf Club

PINEHURST, NC -- Charles Horne and Pat Toomey of Gastonia, NC broke from a pack of teams Friday to win the Carolinas Senior Four-Ball golf championship at Pinehurst National Golf Club. Horne and Toomey shot 32-33--65 for a 135 total, nine under par and a one-shot triumph. "We played well and hit a lot of greens the first day," Toomey said. "But we couldn't make a putt." "Today, we started making some putts," Horne added. They finished one ahead of Mike Whelchel of Canton, NC and Bob Clark of Asheville, NC Whelchel had a 30-foot putt on the last hole to tie the leaders but left his putt below the hole. Whelchel and Clark shot 66--136. Two-time champions Cliff Cunningham of Monroe, NC and Bob Murray of Piedmont, NC were tied with the eventual champions at nine under par with two holes to play but bogeyed them to tie for third with 68--137. They tied with Gene Lookabill of Charlotte, NC and Dean Sheetz of Cornelius, NC, who finished with 67--137. First-round leaders, brothers Buddy Baldwin of Asheville, NC and Jimmy Baldwin of Arden, NC, closed with 73 for 139. The CGA Senior Four-Ball championship is open to male amateur golfers who are legal residents of North Carolina or South Carolina and who are age 55 or older. The championship is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
